From crowdfunding to viral challenges, virtual fundraising has been changing the game for a while, and it turns out there’s nothing like a global pandemic to push forward adoption. Searches for virtual fundraising ideas in 2020 increased by over 1000% year on year, with many non-profits, schools and organisations attempting to make the leap over to find income in the digital jungle. But with 51% of charities admitting they do not have a digital strategy in place, jumping in at the deep end can be dangerous if there is no long-term plan to meet your fundraising goals. Our prediction? Virtual fundraising is here to stay, so rather than make a haphazard leap that may not pay off, we’ve pulled together 4 top tips to get started, so you can drive a sustainable long-term strategy.

  1. Take the first step

Consider your resources, your budget and plan what you want to achieve from your digital fundraising strategy. Make sure your digital strategy aligns with your overall fundraising strategy.

  1. Know where your donors are

Learn about where your donors are, and the types of content or communications that they respond to. This should align with your overall strategy, but digital can allow you to test new audiences in a relatively easy way. Make sure your message fits the purpose of the platform: social media is not one message fits all!

  1. Check you are set up for success

You want to make it as easy as possible for people to donate, so consider whether you are set up to receive donations in different ways. Is your fundraising integrated with your website? If not, we can help. Make sure you keep up to date with new ways to virtually donate, too; TikTok and Instagram recently launched integrated donation platforms to take advantage of the growing trend of philanthropy in younger audiences.

  1. Adapt and innovate

Your digital strategy will likely change over time, so keep a close eye on your KPIs and don’t be afraid to shake things up. With the highest rates of digital engagement ever recorded through lockdown, it’s the perfect time to get started and try new ideas.
