Managing multiple segments of online community members

Start to see your online community in segments, and unlock ways to engage including connecting sub-networks, tailored communication and safeguarding

Managing a diverse community using a single system might seem tricky; making sure that each sub-group feels heard and is able to engage with your organisation in the right way is a key consideration. Whether you are working in a school or university development office or fundraising team in a nonprofit, there will be multiple audiences that have different interests, preferred channels of communication and motivations to engage. Choosing a smart software that does it all helps to overcome this, and ensures that your database is the single source of information for your whole community.

Segmenting your communications

A traditional marketing tactic that helps to boost engagement is segmenting your communications; this means filtering the contacts in your database by certain criteria and sending tailored communications to each relevant group.

ToucanTech enables you to take this further by not only segmenting based on demographic data (age, location), but also engagement data (who opened your last 3 emails, who has made a donation in the last 3 months). Drag-and-drop fields make it easy for admins to construct their own filters and save for later use.

Creating sub-networks within your community

Creating smaller networks with their own private page on your community site is a great way to help like-minded members to connect and share relevant content. You can create groups based on location, industry, interest, or relationship to your organisation (e.g. volunteer, alumni, legator); each group can create their own events, share a private forum, read group news and receive email updates on group activity.

Multi-sites with one database

If you would prefer to have different sites for segments of your community, or for a different purpose, running these sites with the same database is a good way to keep track of your audiences’ behaviour. For example, if you are running a separate fundraising site for a campaign, it’s important that the data entered on these sites can be matched to the existing records for your community site. This way, you can see whether those that choose to donate are also engaging with your organisation in different ways, such as through mentoring or signing up to events.

Ensuring safeguarding for younger/vulnerable members of your community

Organisations such as schools may have underage users who join their community prior to leaving the school, and other organisations may face similar challenges with safeguarding vulnerable members of their community. In order to make your site safe and accessible, it is possible to switch off certain features such as private messaging to keep members safe.
